Proverbs 30:5-6

When human philosophy has exhausted itself and gone dumb, here is where faith finds its rest: in the pure Word of God. Every word of it is pure — tried and refined like gold passed through the fire, without a single grain of alloy or error, because, having God for its Author, it has truth without any mixture of error for its matter. The Bible carries the same stamp of divinity that the sun and the stars carry; there are no superfluities in it, no careless syllables. So go to the Book; there all is light and purity. And notice the tender second half of verse 5: this pure Word is not only a light but a shield — "he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him." The same God who speaks so purely defends the one who takes Him at His word.

And because the Word is perfect and complete, verse 6 draws the fence: "Add thou not unto his words." Do not lay your own ideas alongside Scripture as if they had equal authority — not the traditions of men, not the inventions of a church, not your own preferences read back into the text. The man who adds will be reproved and "found a liar," for what can he be but a liar who sets himself against the truth itself? This is the very warning that seals the whole Bible: "If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book" (Revelation 22:18). The Word is pure; it is sufficient; it is final. Read it with diligence and humility, pray for the Spirit's anointing to understand it, trust the God it reveals — and add nothing to it.
