Proverbs 1:8-9

Look at the order of the chapter. Verse 7: fear God. Verse 8: honor your parents. That is the same order as the Ten Commandments — God first, parents immediately after. God puts parents next in line after Himself, because the family is His own design, His first institution, older than any government and any church. A culture that tears up the family is pulling the copper wiring out of its own walls.

And notice — father and mother both. "The instruction of thy father, and... the law of thy mother." In the ancient world that was radical. The Bible stood alone among ancient books in giving the mother equal honor in the home. Your mother's word is not a suggestion that ranks below your father's; both carry weight stamped by God.

Now, somebody reading this had a father who left, or a home that was a war zone. The Bible does not look away from that — and this verse, rightly divided, is about godly instruction, the kind of parents who point a child toward the Lord. If you did not get that kind of home, this verse is also a blueprint: be the link in the chain that starts it.

Verse 9 gives the payoff, and it is not what you would expect. Obey your parents and you get... jewelry? "An ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck." Here is the idea: character shows. A young man who honors his father and mother walks into a room wearing something money cannot buy. Employers see it. Coaches see it. A wise young woman sees it from across the room. And the reverse is just as visible: you can hang gold on a person who treats their mother like dirt, and the ugliness shines right through the shine.

Real discipline feels like iron handcuffs at first — every teenager who ever had a curfew knows it. But hold on. The same restraint that feels like iron at sixteen turns to gold by thirty. Ask any grown man who is glad now for the rules he hated then.

The Lord Jesus Himself is the proof of this verse. The Son of God, by whom all things were made, "went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them" (Luke 2:51) — subject to a carpenter and his wife. And one of the last things He did, hanging on the cross with the sins of the world on Him, was take care of His mother (John 19:26–27). If honoring parents was not beneath the King of kings, it is not beneath you or me.
