Proverbs 3:5-6

If you memorize only two verses from this book, take these.

Look at the verbs. Trust, in this verse, is a whole-body word — leaning your full weight on something, the way you lean on a ladder you've decided is sound. Not a hand resting on it while your feet stay planted somewhere else. All your weight. With all thine heart — because a divided trust is no trust at all. An old Puritan said it perfectly: a house built partly on rock and partly on sand still falls. To trust God is to lean on Him such that if He fails you, you go down. That is exactly the posture God asks for — because He is exactly the support that will never give.

"And lean not unto thine own understanding." Here is the oldest sin in the world wearing modern clothes. Self-reliance is the one religion our culture preaches without embarrassment — trust yourself, follow your heart, you've got this. Solomon says the opposite, and he says it knowing your understanding is a real tool: God gave you a mind, and this whole book commands you to sharpen it. Use your understanding; just don't lean on it. It is a fine instrument and a terrible foundation. Your own thinking has incomplete data, a built-in bias toward what you want, and zero visibility past the next hour. Leaning on it as far as that prevails is practical atheism — running your life as if there were no God to consult.

"In all thy ways acknowledge him." All. Not just the church ways — the Monday ways. The job decision, the purchase, the relationship, the move. Most men will give God the big formal things and keep the small daily things for themselves — they treat God the way subjects treat a king: official business only. God wants to be treated like family. Picture a queen in her office: ministers of state file in to discuss the policy of nations — and her own toddler runs in crying about a fly. Does she love the small appeal less because it is small? Neither does your Father. Nothing in your life is too minor to bring to Him; thinking otherwise isn't humility, it's distance.

And the promise: "he shall direct thy paths" — He Himself shall make them straight. How does God direct a man today? Not by voices, impressions, or opening the Bible at random like a fortune cookie. He directs by His Word studied, by prayer, by providence arranging circumstances, and by a will kept quiet and ready to obey. Walk that way and here is a banked certainty for your whole life: no step well prayed over will ever bring ultimate regret. Even your wrong turns get overruled by a Guide who — like the best mountain guides — already sees the end while you're still on the trail.
