Proverbs 2:10-11

Read verse 10 slowly, because the entire chapter swings on it. Wisdom enters the heart — and knowledge becomes pleasant.

There is a world of difference between knowing the truth and enjoying it. Truth in the head alone is dry, speculative, and barren — it informs you and changes nothing. Plenty of men can quote the verses they are busy disobeying. But when wisdom drops the eighteen inches from the head to the heart, everything changes: what used to be homework becomes appetite. You stop reading the Bible because you should and start reading it because you are hungry.

And here is why that matters for the fight: pleasure is the only thing that beats pleasure. Sin is not winning in your life because you lack information. Sin wins because it is enjoyable, and you cannot out-argue an appetite — you can only out-feed it. A soul cannot be frightened into holiness; scared-straight wears off by Friday. The governor Felix trembled when Paul preached of judgment — trembled! — and then went right back to his sins (Acts 24:25). Fear rattled him; it could not free him. A human soul is not built to be terrified into goodness. It is built to be won. When the love of God in Christ becomes genuinely sweet to a man, that sweetness carries him the way the sun holds a planet in orbit — no white knuckles required.

So verse 11's promise — "discretion shall preserve thee" — is not magic. It is mechanics. The man who has tasted better stops craving worse, and a guarded heart guards the man. This is exactly why Solomon will say two chapters from now, "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life" (Proverbs 4:23). The heart is the rudder; whoever holds the rudder steers the whole ship.

Verses 12 through 19 now show you the two reefs that rudder will steer you past.
